The summer solstice is a time when Alaskans celebrate the official beginning of summer on June 21 as the sun reaches its northernmost point above the equator. Also called the summer equinox, it is when the famous midnight sun is at its zenith and in Barrow it is a time to enjoy the rare and wonderful bounty of daylight before fall and winter once again approach.

Alaskans experience a wide range of temperatures and weather conditions throughout the rest of the year, so it is no wonder the never-ending daylight of summer solstice kicks off a range of fun events, festivals and games. It is not unusual to see people washing their vehicle at 2:00 am or playing a baseball game with no artificial light at midnight.
